Feature Article: July is the new January!
by Barbara Nelson
|
"There is nothing like first-hand evidence." ~Sherlock Holmes
Jubilant, joyful July! It seems that just a moment ago I submitted the January column; have you been reading since then? In January, I asked you to create goals, applying the stretch phrase "at least." Then, I showed you how to position yourself for success by handling negative self-talk with another simple phrase, "until now." If, until now, you haven't tried these two tips—good news! I said January is the mother of all new starts, but now I can share that July is the puppy of all new starts: full of boundless energy, in constant action and try/fail forward motion.
June's column was the set-up: you were tasked with getting clear about the facts of "where you are" today and what the second half of the year looks like if nothing much changes. Discipline was on the work-life balance menu. Planning. Staying on plan. In July, it’s time to add the incentive of great outcomes to the mix. In January, I wished you your "best year ever." Now, at the midpoint, let's renew that wish.
A client recently shared that she'd been on a plane, working on her third quarter review and goals, when she realized that this review was "stunningly different" because of the work we'd done in her mastermind group. Her word. First-hand evidence.
What evidence do you see for your year so far? What I want for you is exactly what you want for yourself. Enough income to support whatever lifestyle you choose and enough time to enjoy it. Is that where the evidence points? If not, then use "up until now" and make changes, take action. In May, I wrote about the need to make a summer plan, to account for the fact that summers are different. You might think that asking you to recommit to your best year ever in July contradicts that plan. It doesn’t: the commitment to results and action carries through time off and keeps you focused so that your return to productivity is smoother than ever.
I believe that there is always something for you to take and apply and improve your work/life balance; that's my purpose in this column. Today, I'd like you to take away a new commitment to your success in 2012. If you're having a fantastic year so far, congratulations! If not, then take the time to clarify your goals. Make plans. Take action. There is still plenty of time to ensure that, at the end of the year, you'll look back at this time and think "I've never been so focused, never been so sure I'm heading to my goals; I'm building a practice that will serve my life."

Song of the Month: What if You Make More Money than Me?
by Mikey Mel & the JDs
|
I work so hard
every day
I skip most meals, and stay up late
The partners love me
the clients too
But when I sleep I only dream of you
Chorus:
I can't sleep
I stay up late
What if you make more than me someday
I can't sleep
I stay up late
What if you make more, you make more, you make more, than me, someday
You bill 2,000
I gotta bill more
my fear drives me to run up the score
And when you win a case
I get so mad
cuz you get in the way of my partner track
Chorus
My wife she says
don't worry babe
I'm happy with just what you make
But it would make me sick
and eat my brains
if I knew you had more loot in the bank
Chorus
Just one of the hilarious songs on
